This is probably what the "warp pathways" in Star Trek were talking about... and I would strongly rather side with a culture that can develop real interstellar communication and spiritual travel than with anything that is trying to stop them, since I believe that represents a far more hopeful and enjoyable future than anything else I've seen.

So the concern is not that we are consuming too fast, although because of ratios of various things (such as oil) not being PERFECT for our needs, we occasionally notice shortages at the same time that we are being compelled to consume as much of this material as we can as fast as we can.

Believe me, there are systems set up to keep the consumption both enjoyable and productive, that's a big part of what money is meant to do.

Feeling connected, and having a future to look forward to is a big part of keeping the culture and the elements of life together. If people suddenly thought that their entire Galaxy was dead and there was no hope for them to escape their own star system, it would probably start leading them down a pathway into a feral, insane, and ultimately self destructive mindset.

So the neat thing about money is that it acts as a universal inspiration device... you don't have to have the same goals as anyone else, but if you are able to mass enough money... you can pursue those goals any way you can afford to.
