"We all saw it coming, dear."
The way she said it was as if I was a fool for believing in someone. I hated that tone, but I couldn't argue. I deserved this. I continued as if she hadn't spoken, "I just don't know why these patterns keep following me. The more I change, the more the same people keep popping up in my life in different skins."
"Do you think you are the only one that happens to?"
Again with the crone-itude. Of course, I have seen others complain of the very same thing, but that is their life, and their consequences. This is mine. "You sound very cold, Graesil. Remind me not to cross you."
"You would be well to keep that in mind, Seriya Damie."
Why does she have to hammer everything home with that formal little-girl address? I swear she has a power trip over the pupils here. "Oh, am I a member of the Royal Aetherguard now? I certainly am flatt-"
"A common mis-speak, my dear. I simply use the term all day. Please excuse me." She paused to turn toward the viewport, probably hiding a smile, "I certainly would never confuse you for one of our own."
Just then a large transport appeared in the distance with a flash and began lumbering slowly on auto-pilot toward the docking levels. She turned back to me slightly to see if I had noticed, and caught me right in the eye. Lady Matzuhama would be here any minute, and we both knew it.
"I know what you're planning, Princess." I blurted out rather self satisfied. I still don't know what prompted me to show my hand, but it happened. "The reality engine is going to be shut down no matter what you do!" I yelled, and then caught myself and tried to continue in a more professional manner, "I am going to see to it... personally."
I just sounded like I was pouting. This wouldn't go over well in the report. Not well at all. House Thirtyseven is going to love this. The Ligatists are going to hate it. I have no idea what Lady Matzuhama is going to do, but I'm going to find out soon enough.
I hope A.L.A.N. knows what it is doing, because I sure don't. And when I stood to leave, I noticed that Graesil was wearing a Heretic Spirit around her neck. This was the break I was needing! Lady Matzuhama might join me if she finds out our 'beloved' princess has been turned against the Chordists!
I designed this for Cherie Priest, a much better and more accomplished writer than I:[link]
she is finishing up on a new Steampunk style novel that sounds like it will be a rousing read from what she's told me about it. She also interviewed me for an upcoming issue of Weird Tales Magazine. Yes, THAT Weird Tales. They have risen from the dead and are continuing on in the tradition of a true Lovecraftian beast. The issue my work will appear in looks to have a sort of loose steampunk theme to it, judging by the cover I saw, so those of you who enjoy such as that may want to pick it up! It should be coming out in February or March... I'm not quite solid on the publishing date right now.[link]
