Deep under the layers of skywalks and habitat rigs, the millions of gears and pneumatic tubes that make up the heart of Escapement City need a sizable force of skilled workers to keep them running smoothly.
Usually a thankless and nameless job, the Grand Inspectors tirelessly check and re-check wear and tolerances on the endlessly meshing teeth. They decide where the precious grease and oil go, they decide what the metalsmiths need to fix, and they alone can grind the city to a halt in an emergency. Even the Duke of the city must get their permission to change the settings.
Generally a dirty job, when they go on their required sabbitcal or if they go before the high court, they are bound by Duke's Etiquette to appear in a white suit, topped off literally with this lovely leather hat.
They remind me of the horologists from a story I started and never finished; they were very poorly paid, but maintained all of the clocks in the city to make sure everything was running on time. A little like that one city in "Jing: King of Bandits" now that I think about it...

Jasper glared at what she'd just typed as if it offended her. "Well," she grumbled, "so much for being profound and meaningful."
