Discreet Companion Raygun by porkshanks Discreet Companion Raygun by porkshanks
This is my third build of the Ladies' Discreet Companion Raygun that I created for the wonderful MAKE Magazine.

[link]

The idea was to build something from new and relatively eay to locate parts only, since that makes it a lot easier for people to actually complete the design should they decide to give it a shot *rimshot* sorry about the pun there. I'd fire myself, but I'm self employed!

Anyways, Gareth asked me if I would design a Ray Gun of some sort but that it should be a shorter article since they already had a few big projects in the issue... so I figured it was time to create a Derringer style weapon for ladies to carry in their purses or such. I've also been obsessing over making my work more functional lately, so I also decided to make this Ray Gun a working butane lighter, since that seemed like a logical enough leap.

The prototype became a birthday gift for my friend Befu, and the second one was sold at NorWesCon a couple weekends ago. I made the second one originally for display purposes only to advertise the article, but I had a lot of people asking if it was for sale... so I decided to make a couple more to sell on my Etsy page:

FYI: the pattern for the metal work is here:

Looks pretty awesome. But at first I thought it was a ornamental looking jumpdrive.

That is so cool. I'd LOVE to try it for myself (BIG fan of building things). How much is a subscription to MAKE?

Pretty cool design of this little badgirl! It would be neat if you stuck one of those laser pointers in the barrel so it would shoot off a beam! Nice design and great crafting, excellent work!

Is the barrel a lighter? If you're making an other gun, I recommend a pepperbox. A pepperbox is a gun with multiple barrels. Kinda like a prototype for an revolver.

Clever design- I think I see the lighter, but is that a coat hook as the handle? :D

I love brass- I started using it recently, and it's just wonderful: the the colour, the texture, the shine when it's polished...

Sweet. Now that's something I would love to just pull out of my coat pocket to show off.
My roommate said that she wished she smoked just so she could use something like that to light a cigaret.
